The multiverse is filled with endless possibilities, and among those endless possibilities, there is perhaps a universe where Martín del Mar and angelo vestri have a great relationship, enjoy spending time in each other's company, and would totally agree to have a drink together on New Year’s Eve.

”Ah, look what the shady Decidueye dragged in.” is of course the oh-so-witty and totally hilarious quip made by the banker when seeing his favourite pilot step into the Burning Maw. This may be the last day of the year, but it also happens to be surprisingly busy for him, to the point that the only reason he’s here right now is to finish his drink he has ordered during an appointment that had ended just a moment earlier.

A Zombie they call it. Too many different rums for his taste, but then again, Mars tends to be a man who likes his drinks neat. The faint notes of anise are a nice touch, at least.

”What are you doing all the way in Rustboro?” Despite everything, when Mars raises his glass towards him, Angelo is given a smirk – sharp as can be. "Care for a drink?"

Here's hoping that the voice in the Cloud had been onto something regarding the end of all universes. For there being a possibility of one in existence where Martín del Mar and Angelo were on close, friendly terms with one another sounded like it needed to be wiped out.

“Aha, so you did get my Christmas card,” comes the counter, not missing a beat in the dance of witty remarks and irritating jabs. “Calling him shady is kind of unnecessary though, Del Mar, don't you think? He flew all that way just to deliver it to you.”

As soon as Angelo had pushed through the entrance into The Burning Maw, he's met with the familiar face of one Mr POG Bank himself. Along with the overwhelming urge to spin on his heel right back out the door.

Only he hadn't. Not when Martín del Mar's quips are a call to war he cannot turn tail from.

He did have a penchant for a challenge, after all.

Walking towards the banker, hands are extended in front of him, palms faced up towards the ceiling as the pilot makes a show of gesturing to the whole room. “For a drink, Sherlock.”

The prefixing 'no shit' is silently conveyed in a smug smirk.

“Sure do if I'm going to be in your company,” he teasingly says, spoken as if he hadn't willingly taken up the offer. With a tilt of his chin, Angelo nods towards the orange concoction in front of Mars. “I'll have whatever you're having.”

Cocktails weren't his go to, often far too sweet for his liking but when in Alto Mare, so they say.

“Angelo, you’re so quick to take insult. I meant it as a thing. Being shady can be really beneficial to some people.” The banker grins with that cheeky grin of his, the some people clearly meaning angelo vestri himself and most definitely not our good, kind, pro-League, philanthropist.

When Angelo gives him the obvious answer (boring) and implies that it’s obvious that he shouldn’t have even asked (even more boring), Mars simply raises a brow and takes another measured sip from his drink, because if he were to ever act as if anything the pilot says actually affects him, that would clearly mean defeat.

“A Zombie it is. So, how’s life treating you? Ending the year on a good note?” A surprisingly friendly question on his part. Does he actually intend to have a nice conversation with Angelo dearest? "Oh wait, do you need me to pay for your drink? I really wouldn't mind."

“Well. I didn't get obliterated by a meteor, so I suppose that's a good note to end the year on.”

Who knows, though. This conversation may very well make Angelo rescind that statement after one aptly named Zombie, given the company.

Then, as prophesised, there it is. Their usual back and forth beginning.

“I hope not. Would be bad form to offer me a drink and then back out, Del Mar.” He chuckles. “Not trying to get me to change my mind to save face, are you?”

Angelo grins at him, refusing to take the bait with a lazily coy kind of smile. Adding a worm to the hook.

And therein lies the root of their problem.

Why, despite the previous formalities of business having kept them barely civil, there had always been a lingering of sharpness beneath the surface of faux bright smiles and as witty prods attempt to eagerly pluck apart seams.

They're far too fucking similar to be friends.

“Another Zombie over here.”

Raising his hand to the bartender to catch their attention, Angelo then turns back to Mars with a head tilt in their direction. A gesture to pay up.

Sharp smiles and double-edge words are exactly what is to expected whenever the two of them are in the same room, and all of those expectations are met within moments. It's almost like they can't help themselves, but then again, why would they?

But, wait... what was that about a eulogy?! As if Mars has such importance in Angelo's life.

Maybe he thinks he does.

"You know what? I've had a pretty successful year and it's ending on a great note, so... sure, I'll pay for your drink to celebrate your survival."

And so he does, but it's almost as if Mars doesn't even consider the fact that he also should be celebrating his own survival. Had he expected to live on? Not exactly, but appearing unshakable is important to him.
